What must be done to fight a new kind of war in Lebanon that in reality is only one battle in the much larger War Against Islamofascism (AKA WWIV) as witnessed by the recent events in Great Britain e.g. see Code Red at FrontPageMag.com

The question remaining does Israel and ultimately the US have the political will to do it against the growing international pressure, a UN co-opted and impotent, a biased and blind LL and MSM rooting for the enemy as some underdog in a Sunday afternoon football game, and the two-faced French government?

Will Israel Bring Out the Hammer and Anvil?

Despite calls from many quarters for a deeper Israeli ground offensive into Lebanon, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his cabinet have thus far avoided the risky move.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) do not want a repeat of 1982. They know it is a new day, a new war. The old adage that “Generals fight yesterday’s war” does not apply to the IDF so far. Instead, the IDF has been waging a casualty-averse, politically-correct campaign that consistently comes up short. It is high time the IDF obliges Hezb’allah’s desire for suicidal martyrdom.

I argued earlier that the terrorist outfit intended to wage a dual-strategy: one of immobile defense from well-constructed bunkers, forts, tunnels, and mined buildings in the hilltop border towns of Lebanon, and the other a classic guerrilla war of ambush, IEDs, and hit-and-run tactics that requires a massive and rapid Israeli invasion deep into Lebanon, leaving IDF lines of communications over-extended and vulnerable. So far, Israel has avoided an ill-advised headstrong rush into Lebanon but its tentative moves and over-reliance on air power against entrenched Hezb’allah forces have been a major disappointment.

Unfortunately, the new kind of war emerging in Lebanon is one that we have seen glimpses of in Iraq: armored and mechanized, modern high-tech militaries are having problems with well-equipped and-trained, fanatical, insurgent terrorists armed with an array of weaponry that runs the gamut from simple AK-47s to IEDs to advanced anti-tank missiles.

Smell That Whiff of Panic?

Smell the whiff of panic? Iraq has/may/will soon collapse into civil war! Israel may not be able to fully dismantle Hezbollah! Like Falstaff before battle we whine to Prince Hal that we “would ‘twere bed-time, Hal, and all well.”

It’s as if Europe never had its tribal politics and terrorist warfare, with roving militias camped out in weak states lacking the power to suppress them. In the Hundred Years War, the English did a splendid job of reducing France to a wasted land. As the Black Prince went raiding deep into France what was he but a prototype of Iranian President Ahmadinejad whose proxies are wasting Iraq and Lebanon?

Then the Brits came home and laid waste to their homeland in the Wars of the Roses. Shakespeare gave us a picture of that period.

Feel sorry for the French? Don’t waste your sympathy. Two hundred years after the Hundred Years War the French under Cardinal Richelieu help lay waste to Germany in the Thirty Years War as armies from several nations march to and fro across that unhappy land, eating all the food and looting all the wealth as they went. It is estimated that the population in Germany declined by at least one third from 1608 to 1648, a disaster far worse than the butchery of the Second Thirty Years War of 1914 to 1945, leaving aside the special attention paid to the Jews.
