Yst I posted a piece re, IAEA - Iran Is Stepping Up Nuclear Work (Appearing in the NYT no less). A reader from another email list replied with these valid points:

It is unclear whether Iran can sustain its recent progress. Major setbacks are common in uranium enrichment.

It is entirely possible that miscalculation, equipment failures or sabotage could prevent the Iranian government from reaching its goal.

It is unclear whether the Iranians have the technology to produce a weapon small enough to fit atop their missiles.

Some ... suspect that the Iranians may not be driving for a weapon but rather for that "breakout capability," because that alone can serve as a nuclear deterrent.

I replied:

Good points. Yes there are real issues whether the Iranians can put it all together. However are you willing to take the chance given the current state of mind of President MAD and Imam Yazdi?

I'm not willing to sit on my hands and allow this to happen. I believe that strategic economic pressure brought to bare on the Iranian Regime may be enough to cause it to implode. The Iranian economy is going in the tank from failure to invest in their oil/gas infrastructure.

Bob Owens of Confederate Yankee posted this excellent analysis re an Iranian led nuclear conflict in the Middle East. I've excerpted this key portion dealing with the apocalytipic mission that President MAD and Imam Yazdia are on. They are consolidating their power base with their own followers and ousting the more moderates within the ruling Regime.

The important message here is that President MAD and the followers of the ultra-religious Shi'ia sect, the Hojjatieh, will not be deterred by the Western mindset of mutually assured distraction (MAD) that kept the Soviets in check. RBT has been harping on this for years. President MAD and his followers are no different than those fanatical religious cultists we are all familiar with, David Koresch and the Branch Davidians and Jim Jones and his Kool-Aid followers. Yes, there are many other end of the world cults but how many are on a clear course to obtain nuclear weapons to fulfill their religious prophecy.

WAKE UP AMERICA!

There is true Evil rising in the world. There can be no moral equivalence given to Islamofascism, there is no middle ground, there can be no appeasement. The Greatest Generation that went before us clearly recognized those danger signs and rose to the challenge. They implored us, "Never again!" Have we forgotten that message as we go about our daily lives sipping our cafe lattes? Any ideology that doesn't recognize the free will of men and women is destined to fail in time. The only question remaining is how many will be killed before the Good rise up and conquer this Evil.

This ideology from the Middle Ages must be vanquished.

The Eschatology of the Coming Nuclear War

U.S. News and World Report has a short post up concerning the simulation of nuclear detonations in the Middle East :

The executive summary of one study provided to the U.S. military by a strategic planning contractor stated:

Ultra-religious Shia clerics and Ahmadinejad are dedicated to the near-term messianic return of the 12th Imam via the creation of an apocalypse.

I don't think it gets much clearer than that.

The contention is that not only do the Hojjatieh anticipate the "creation of chaos on earth," they actively seek to create an apocalypse. Based upon their public pronoucements[sic] and nuclear weapons research, it seems quite clear that their preferred method is to instigate a nuclear attack against Israel. They know that Israel will respond with a retaliatory nuclear strike of their own, and are in fact, are more than likely counting on it.

It is this Israeli return nuclear strike on Tehran that Ahmadinejad and the Hojjatieh are counting upon to trigger the Madhi's return.

Iran and Ahmadinejad have been very clear in their desire to see Israel "wiped off the map," with multiple threatening pronouncements, and Ahmadinejad himself seems quite convinced that he is on a mission from Allah.

Mortal concerns and fears have little importance for an Iranian leadership seemingly bent on using a nuclear war to force a messianic return. Tens of millions may perish because a once-outlawed cult thinks a nuclear war will convince a four-year-old messiah to crawl out of a well in which he's been hiding 1,066 years.

I sadly fear that Democratic Party principles of avoidance will force our government to continue to discount the Iranian nuclear threat until after Iranian missiles are already arcing in towards Tel Aviv, at which point any further action against Iran will be addressed to a relative handful of survivors.
